In the increasing competitive marketplace, process management is a key leadership initiative to manage costs, improve utilization of resources and to better meet customers’ needs.

From a strategic perspective, Michael Porter published the Value Chain Analysis that viewed the cost structure of an organization subdivided into separate process activities (functions): primary activities and support activities.

Given the importance of processes as a source of competitive advantage, it is important for leaders to drive process thinking in the organization.  It starts with understanding every key activity from a process model perspective so that staff can work on improving the process elements of inputs, transformation (value adding activities), outputs, resources and control/evaluation.

The understanding of all the elements of a process is best represented by Process Mapping.  Having a representation of the process and knowing the interacting links will allow for process improvements to take place. When desired outcomes are not attained from a process, improvements can be made through analysis and problem solving tools and techniques.

Once the process is stable, it follows that its performance is monitored and controlled.  Process Indicators are evaluated to ensure the relevancy and veracity of the activity. It is important to differentiate between the monitoring of leading and lagging indicators.

The main benefits of having a good understanding of your company’s key processes are to gain efficiency, effectiveness and agility to respond to exceptions and constantly changing market requirements.
